چکیده

We have designed and built a passive haptic display by integrating an electromagnet into an infra-red optical mouse. When the electromagnet is not energized, the mouse acts normally, with the same low friction and only a slight increase in mass. Energizing the electromagnet attracts the mouse towards a ferromagnetic mouse pad, increasing the normal force, and thus the frictional force, between the mouse and the mouse pad. This allows a two-dimensional display of varying frictional forces. Our hypothesis was that an increase in friction over particular targets could enable the user to travel more quickly between those targets. In addition to several demonstrations, we designed a performance experiment to quantitatively determine how user performance is affected by friction feedback during a targeting task. The results of this experiment show a conclusive relationship between the field strength of the magnet and the targeting time.

TIME OPTIMAL SLEW MANEUVER OF MAGNETICALLY ACTUATED LEO SATELLITES

Conventional magnetic attitude control methodologies require several orbital periods to accomplish the required attitude maneuvers due to the existence of an uncontrollable axis, namely the local Earth’s magnetic field vector. Since in some attitude maneuver missions the elapsed time is of critical importance, those time-consuming controllers are not satisfactory and we need a much faster contr...

Precise Positioning of Piezo-actuated Stages Using Hysteresis-observer Based Control

The piezo-actuated stages are composed of the piezo-electric actuator and the positioning mechanism. The positioning accuracy of the piezo-actuated stage is limited due to hysteretic nonlinearity of the PEA and friction behaviour of the positioning mechanism. To compensate this nonlinearity of piezoelectric actuator, a PI feedback control associated with feedforward compensating based on the hy...

On the Emulation of Sti Walls and Static Friction with a Magnetically Levitated Input/Output Device

This paper addresses issues of mechanical emulation of sti walls and stick-slip friction with a 6-DOF magnetically levitated joystick. In the case of sti wall emulation, it is shown that the PD control implementation commonly used severely limits achievable wall damping and sti ness. It is also shown that the perceived surface sti ness can be increased without loss of stability by applying a br...

Optimal Discrete-time Magnetic Attitude Control of Satellites

The problem of designing discrete-time attitude controllers for magnetically actuated spacecraft is considered. Several methods are discussed and a novel approach to the tuning of ”projection based” controllers is proposed relying on periodic optimal output feedback control techniques. The main advantages of the proposed method are discussed and illustrated in a simulation study. Copyright c ©2...

A Rotational Gyroscope with a Water-Film Bearing Based on Magnetic Self-Restoring Effect

Stable rotor levitation is a challenge for rotational gyroscopes (magnetically suspended gyroscopes (MSG) and electrostatically suspended gyroscopes (ESG)) with a ring- or disk-shaped rotor, which restricts further improvement of gyroscope performance. In addition, complicated pick-up circuits and feedback control electronics propose high requirement on fabrication technology. In the proposed g...
